Historic women’s soccer match set for the Tampa waterfront in March
Women’s soccer continues to rise in prominence across the U.S., and a historic match is set to highlight that growth. On Sunday, March 2 at 6 p.m., Riverfront Stadium (1701 N Blvd) in Tampa will host a groundbreaking game between Gotham FC, the 2023 champion of the National Women’s Soccer League (NWSL), and Tampa Bay Sun FC, a team from the newly formed USL Super League. This game marks the first-ever matchup between a team from the USL Super League and one from the NWSL, two of the country’s top women’s professional soccer leagues.
A monumental match in Tampa
“We’re excited to host this monumental game,” said Christina Unkel, President and General Manager of Tampa Bay Sun FC. “It’s a major milestone for both leagues and a reflection of the growing strength of women’s professional soccer in the U.S. Whether you’re a long-time soccer fan or just looking for a fun experience, we invite everyone to join us at Riverfront Stadium for this unforgettable event.”
Gotham FC, representing the 13-year-old NWSL, boasts a talented roster, including gold-medal-winning Team USA players like Rose Lavelle, Tierna Davidson, and Emily Sonnett. Tampa Bay Sun FC, a team from the emerging USL Super League, will counter with a strong lineup featuring three of the league’s top goal scorers: Carlee Giammona, Cecilie Fløe Nielsen, and Natasha Flint.
