Party like a mindful pirate: keep the beads out of the Bay during Gasparilla

by Andrew Harlan

As the Gasparilla Children’s Parade approaches on January 18 and Pirate Fest the following Saturday, Tampa’s Department of Solid Waste asks pirates to help protect the bay by recycling their beads. The Bead-Free Bay initiative encourages parade-goers to drop off unwanted beads at designated collection sites, keeping them out of the waste stream and putting them to good use for next year’s festivities.

From January 27 through May 2025, beads can be dropped off at four local centers during their regular operating hours:

  • Kate Jackson Community Center – 821 S Rome Ave.
  • Loretta Ingraham Recreation Complex – 1611 N Hubert Ave.
  • Copeland Park Center – 11001 N 15th St.
  • MacDonald Training Center – 5420 W Cypress St.

Eco-conscious fun at Gasparilla

The city asks participants to drop off only beads—no costumes, props, or trash. The goal is to divert plastic waste from the environment and give beads a second life.

Throwing beads or other plastic items into Tampa Bay violates federal and state laws. Beads pose a significant environmental threat, breaking down into microplastics that linger for centuries, harming marine wildlife.

The Bead Reuse Program, launched in 2018, allows Tampa to recycle these treasures. Beads are collected, cleaned, and repackaged for future parades. Local non-profit MacDonald Training Center, which trains people with disabilities, oversees the process. Keep Tampa Bay Beautiful volunteers help sanitize and prepare the beads, which have amounted to more than 20,750 pounds since the program began.

Partnership with multiple local organizations

Mayor Jane Castor encourages residents to participate: “Pirates have been incredibly generous in recent years, and we hope to break a record this year.”

The Bead-Free Bay campaign partners with the Florida Aquarium, Pirate Water Taxi, and other local organizations to ensure Tampa Bay stays clean and vibrant.

Take action this Gasparilla season. Keep the beads out of the bay and help make a difference.
